Abstract

1395418 Treating I C engine charges F A GILEWSKI and A L GILEWSKI 3 May 1973 [24 July 1972] 34476/72 Heading FIB Apparatus for reducing the amount of toxic gases exhausted as a result of combustion of carbonaceous fuel comprises a tank 1 containing water, an air pipe 2 extending below the water level, and an outlet pipe 3 above the water level adapted for connection to a suction source and into which a mixture of air and water vapour is drawn, part 7 of the pipe being formed as a heat exchanger with the exhaust pipe 6, so that the combustion gases convert the water vapour into super-heated steam, the delivery end of the outlet pipe being adapted to supply the steam to a chamber from which the combustion gases are exhausted. In Fig. I the chamber is the combustion chamber of an I.C. engine. The engine is supplied with a combustible mixture by a carburetter 11'. A butterfly valve 10 controls the flow of air into the pipe 2. In a modification, Fig.2 (not shown) the fuel/air mixture is supplied to the cylinder by a second apparatus similar to the tank 1, inlet pipe 2 and outlet pipe 3, but the second tank contains petrol. In a further modification a single tank containing a mixture of petrol and water is used instead of two separate tanks. For use with a jet engine, the outlet pipe 3 passes through the exhaust jet and then emits the mixture of air and super heated steam into the compressor intake. For use with a solid fuel furnace exhausting into a chimney, air is drawn into the pipe 2 by a fan in the outlet end of the pipe 3 which is situated inside the chimney.
