Abstract

1394364 Controlling ignition of burners ENERGY EQUIPMENT CO Ltd F A BURROWS A B PRITCHARD and I H CLINCH 15 June 1972 [15 June 1971] 27993/71 Heading F4T A safety device for a hydrocarbon fuel combustion appliance comprises a detector capable of sensing the presence of hydrocarbon gases or vapours in the combustion zone, and means connected to the detector for inhibiting the commencement of an ignition sequence if, and so long as, the detector senses the presence of unburnt hydrocarbon fuel. The detector C is located at the opposite end of the combustion zone F from the burner and on operation of fan J receives a sample of the combustion zone contents. If no gas/vapour is detected the detector C causes a signal to be sent through a relay K and contacts K1 to a control D which initiates the ignition sequence by actuating igniters L and opening pilot fuel inlet valve M. If gas/vapour is detected no signal is transmitted and if after a pre-set time the detector still senses the gas/vapour a time delay relay opens contacts G1 to stop fan J, cause the appliance to become inoperative and actuate a visual or audible alarm. The control system may be pneumatic or hydraulic instead of electric. If a fan is not included, a pump may be provided for continuously feeding a sample of the combustion zone contents to the detector. The detector may also be capable of detecting carbon monoxide so that a visual or audible alarm may be given if the fuel/air ratio becomes out of adjustment.
