Abstract

When the atmosphere of a continuously operating oven approaches an explosive condition due to the presence therein of inflammable solvent vapours, which are evaporated from work passing through the oven, warning is given by means of an apparatus which withdraws from the oven a continuous stream of the atmosphere therein, and passes this continuous stream through a single chamber in which it is admixed with a gaseous fuel, supplied to the chamber at a constant rate and so predetermined as to form with said continuous stream an explosive mixture only when the solvent vapour content of the stream is of a predetermined value less than that necessary to render the oven atmosphere explosive, and causes the mixture while still in the chamber to move continuously past a source of ignition which is adapted so that when the solvent vapour content reaches or exceeds said predetermined value the ignition explodes the mixture. The ignition means may be a flame extending into the chamber which initiates a signal operated by an electrical relay supported exteriorly of the chamber to control the on/off operation of a valve through which the gaseous fuel, e.g. coal gas, is admitted to the chamber and heat-responsive means located in the chamber and connected with the said relay to control energization and de-energization thereof. The relay may also be connected to shut off the oven or to give an audible or visible indication of the danger, e.g. by means of a lamp or a bell.
