Abstract

1393868 Ultraviolet radiation sensitive organic polyhalogen print out material AGFAGEVAERT 2 Aug 1972 [27 Aug 1971] 40349/71 Heading G2C A photo-sensitive material comprising in intimate admixture (A) at least one spiropyran compound, (B) at least one ultraviolet radiation sensitive organic polyhalogen compound which on exposure forms a dye salt with (A) and (C) a compound of the Formula:-R 1 -CO-NHR 2 wherein R 1 is optionally substituted alkyl, aryl or heterocyclyl or NHR 3 or NR 3 R 4 where R 3 and R 4 are each optionally substituted alkyl or aryl; and R 2 is H or an organic group. (C) may be acetanilide or an acetanilide derivative. The material may in addition contain (see U.K. Patent 1359472) (D) at least one compound selected from: where D is an electron-donating group; Z represents a conjugated system; R is H, a hydrocarbon group or a heterocyclic group or the atoms necessary to form a homocyclic or heterocyclic ring with an atom of Z; Q 1 completes a ring or ring system in which the group C=X through a conjugated system is linked to an electron-donating group; X is an electro-negative atom or group; Q2 completes a heterocyclic ring having an electronegative character with respect to D; Y is -CO-CO-, -SO-, -SO 2 - or -CX-; Q 3 is a heterocyclic nucleus containing a dialkylamino group that is linked through a conjugated system with =CPQ where P and Q are each electron attracting substituents, or together complete a heterocyclic ring with electro-negative character; L 1 and L3 are each optionally substituted methine; and L 2 is a monovalent chemical bond, a α #-ethylenically unsaturated bivalent group or L 1 , L2 and L3 together represent a double bond; a 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-quinoline or a polymer thereof; a polymer containing recurring units of the formula:- where Z is S when present; A is a single bond or a bivalent hydrocarbon group; R 1 is H or methyl; R 2 is H, methyl or ethyl; Q 1 and Q 2 are each H or together complete an adjacent carbocyclic ring or ring system which may be substituted; Q 3 and Q 4 are each H or together complete an adjacent carbocyclic ring or ring system which may be substituted; and n' is I or 2; an N-containing compound containing one of the following tautomeric groups:- HS-#C=#N # S=#C-#NH; and inorganic compound producing photo-electrons under the influence of actinic radiation and having a basic or amphoteric character e.g. photo-conductive ZnO or PbO. The material may contain a hydrophobic binder, and an anti-foggant e.g. a sterically hindered phenol or a triaryl compound of a Group V element. The material may contain Pb, Hg, Bi, Ba and/or W to render it sensitive to X-rays, ultraviolet radiation being generated by exposure to X-rays. A visible image is produced by (a) imagewise exposure to actinic radiation to give a print-out negative image, (b) imagewise exposure to actinic radiation sufficient only to produce a latent image and then overall exposure to render the latent image visible or (c) a low-level overall exposure to actinic radiation followed by imagewise exposure to give a visible image. The material may be heated to 40-70‹C during exposure to visible light. The visible image may be stabilized by heating or by treatment with solvents to remove the organic polyhalogen.
