Abstract

1393581 Water sprinklers H R DI PALMA 18 April 1972 [19 April 1971 13 April 1972] 17849/72 Heading AID [Also in Divisions B8 D1 and F2] A water sprinkling appliance comprises a sledge carrying a rotary sprinkler nozzle, and a wheeled frame having a hose which is wound onto a reel, itself intermittently driven by a water activated double acting jack. In operation the sledge is spaced from the wheeled frame and moves towards it as the hose is wound onto the reel. In a preferred embodiment the speed of rotation of the chain is controlled according to the amount of hose wound thereon and the water supply is automatically cut-off once the sledge has been wound onto a ramp which is mounted on the wheeled frame. In a first embodiment (Figs. 2-3) the drum 1 is mounted on a rotatable turret 3 which carries a ramp 13 up which the sledge 11 moves so as to rest on a bracket 12 when reeled in. Water is fed to a hose 10 via pipes 103, 104 and the other end of the hose is connected to a tube 26 mounted on the sledge and carrying a rotary sprinkler nozzle at its upper end. The drum 1 is intermittently driven by the rod of a double-acting jack 16 to rewind the hose which is guided onto the drum by a stirrup 231, reciprocated along a guide rod 233 by a screw threaded rod 234 see also Divisions B8 and Dl. In a second embodiment (Fig. 16) (see also Figs. 9-14 not shown) water is supplied to a double acting jack 315 via a two-way valve 325 which is controlled by a two position valve 324, moved between these positions by an arm 327 pivotally mounted on a rod 326 which is connected to the rod 316 of the jack 315. A lever 335 is urged by a spring against the hose coils on the drum and is connected via a linkage 334 to a flow control valve 336 and closure valve 332 in the water circuit to the valve 325. As the lever 335 is deflected due to the increasing diameter of the coils the valve 336 is closed to reduce the water flow rate and hence reduce the speed of rotation of the drum so as to maintain the ground speed of the sledge constant. The valve 332 is closed and the water supply cut off, if the deflection of the lever 335 exceeds a certain limit due to uneven rewinding of the hose. A cable 331 extends across the ramp so that when the sledge climbs it, a lever 329 of a valve 328 is tripped and the valve 328 cuts off the water supply to the jack 315 and feeds water to a jack 314 which then raises the ramp. Upon the ramp reaching a raised position, a linkage opens a discharge valve 341. The hose is guided onto the drum by a stirrup which reciprocates along a screw threaded transverse rod which is rotated by a pawl and ratchet mechanism (see also Division F2) driven by the lever 326. A linkage associated with this mechanism reverses the direction of rotation of the rod when the stirrup abuts either of two stops, each at one end of the screw thread.
