An irrigation machine having booms 4 carrying spray devices 7 and 8 comprises a chassis adapted to be propelled across the ground to be irrigated by the pressure of water supplied to the chassis through a hose 10. The chassis carries a winch drum 45 which is caused to rotate by piston actuated pawl and ratchet mechanism so as to move the chassis by shortening a cable connection 46 between the winch drums and an anchorage fixed with respect to the ground. The hose is initially wound on a drum 9 the water supplied through the hose from a hydrant somewhere on the ground passing to the interior of the drum before flowing through a pipe 23 to a valve unit 12 where it is used to reciprocate a piston in a cylinder 32 prior to passing to the booms 4 through a pipe 29. The piston is double-acting a water operated valve change-over unit being incorporated in the unit 12 for this purpose. The moving piston actuates the winch drum 45 through a lever linkage and the pawl and ratchet mechanism, and an adjustable plate is provided adjacent the drum 45 which enables the pawl to be raised, if necessary, during part of its travel over the ratchet thereby enabling the speed of the machine over the ground to be controlled. By lifting the pawl from the ratchet through the use of the plate the drum is freely rotatable so that the cable 46 may be unwound from the drum and anchored again as required in a new position. The hose 10 may be rewound on the drum 9 through the use of a handwheel 54 or a connection 57 from a tractor power take-off shaft.
