this upright portion. It is to be observed that the member 28 is provided at its opposite sides with ports 34. When water flows through the sprinkler pipes 38 the T-casting 29 will revolve and from time to time the ports 34 will be brought into alinement with the interior of the T-casting so that water will flow out in a series of jets through the sprinkler pipes 36. The member 28 has intermediate its ends a collar 35 and the casting 29 is recessed as shown in Figure 4 to receive this collar so that a packing box 38 may hold this collar in place and prevent leakage of water to this point. This packing box 36 has its gland member provided externally with gear teeth 37. Mounted on the upper end of the bracket [7 where it turns inwardly towards the pipe 21 is a gear 38 wherewith the gear 31 meshes, so that by this means whenever the gear 31 is rotated by the action of the sprinkler arms the gear 38 will likewise be rotated. In order to brace the parts, a brace member 39 connects the tubular portion 21 to the bracket I1. Extending from the bracket [1 inwardly is an arm 40 which carries a pair of parallel guide bars 4| slidably through the arm 40. The gear 38 is fixed on a depending shaft 42 having at its lower end a fixed disk 43 carrying a pin 44 which is adjustably held in the disk 43 by means of a set screw 45. This pin 44 extends upward from a disk 46 fixedly carried by the pin. It is here to be noted that the relation of the disks 43 and 46 may be changed by adjustment of the pin 44, the latter being held in adjusted position by the screw 45. De-
pending from the disk 46 is a crank pin 41 which; is connected by a link 48 to a cross-head 49 carried by the guide bars 4|. From an examination of Figures 6, 7 and 3, it will be obvious that if'the crank pin 41 is so adjusted through the adjustment of the disk 46 as to come into alinement with the shaft 42, then the rotationof this shaft will have no effect on the movement of the cross-head 49, but by varying the relationship between the disks 43 and 46 an adjustment of thelength of stroke of the pin 41 may be obtained and thus variation of the stroke of the crosshead 49 may likewise be obtained. Pivoted on the upward end of the cross-head 49 is a downwardly curved ratchet member 50 which engages the periphery of a ratchet wheel mounted on the shaft member is to rotate thereon. Also there is rotatably mounted on the shaft portion 2| a wheel '52 which is preferably of the same diameter as the ratchet'wheel 5E. The wheels 5i and 52 are connected by bars 53 which constitute the means for holding the hose 20 which passes from the T-fitting 19 between two of the bars 53 and thus may lie, when unreeled, on the ground. Also there is mounted on the arm 40 a latching ratchet 54.
In Figures 7, 8 and 9 of the drawings, there is shown a modified form of crank mechanism for adjusting thelength of travel of the cross-head 49, the main purpose of such modification being the provision of indicating means for setting the crank mechanism at any desired, predetermined point of attachment of the shaft 42 to the cam piece 80 is adjacent the arcuate edge 8|. In the opposite end of the cam piece 80 and depending therefrom is a pin 82 which is adjustably held in said cam piece by a set screw 83. Fixedly attached to the lower end of the pin 82 is a second cam piece 84 having at least one arcuate edge 85. Fixedly attached to the cam piece 84 and adjacent the arcuate edge 85 is 2. depending pin 85 which is rotatably connected to the link 43 previously described. It will thus be seen that by moving the cam piece relative to the cam piece 84, the shaft 42 and pin 86 may be moved into alinement or out of alinement by varying degrees, but with the arcuate edges 8| and remaining in substantially vertical alinement. Thus, a base mark 81 and indicating marks 88 may be inscribed in the arcuate edges SI and 85 to permit a predetermined setting.
Now it is to be observed that the rotation of the sprinkler effects ratchet movement of the wheel 5| and thus causes movement of the device over the ground, the holding ratchet 54 preventing accidental backward movement of the machine.
It is, of course, not always desirable that such backward movement be always prevented since there are times, especially when the hose is being unreeled, that it is desired to effect such backward movement. To this end there is provided alongside of the bar 45 a spring latch 56 carrying a pin 57 which may be caused to engage beneath the holding pawl 54 if. the
latter be raised as shown in Figure 6.
Obviously, it is undesirable that the machine should automatically overrun the water supply to which the hose 20 is'attached, and to this end means are provided for closing off the water supply at any desired distance from the attachment of the hose thereto. As shown in Figure 2, a rod 58 extends through the outer shaft 2| and carries on the end projecting into the T- oasting It a valve 59. At its outer end this rod extends through the casting 22 and carries a collar as between which and a packing gland ti is a coiled compression spring 62 urging the valve 59 to close. It is, of course, necessary that this valve must be kept open if the machine is to work at any desired time, and, therefore, the collar til is engageable by a pawl 63 spring mounted on the member 22. From this pawl there extends forwardly a cord or wire 64 and on the post !2 there is mounted a bracket 55 carrying a lever ti; to the upper end of which the forward ends of the cord or wire M are con-- nected. This lever'fifi has a downwardly extending portion (5? which lies closely over the hose 2%. Now, by placing a wicket S8 at any desired distance from the point of connection of the hose 2a} with the ground or other supply, contact will be established by the lever 6'! with this wicket 38 and this will result in tripping the pawl t3 thus allowing the valve to close and thus stopping both reeling and sprinkling.
For supporting the rear end of the device and enabling it to roll freely over the ground while maintaining the wheels 53 and 52 at sufficient clearance from the ground, there are provided a pair of ground wheels t5, these wheels being mounted on downwardly and'rearwardly inclined tubular extensions N3 of the frame members It. A handle ii is preferably attached to the forward end of the frame to enable the device to be manually drawn from one place to the other at the will of the operator.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred'enibodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood'that minor changes 1. In a combined hose reel and sprinkler, a
ground wheel supported frame, a hose reel carried thereby, said reel including a ratchet wheel fixedly attached thereto, a rotary sprinkler supported by said frame and rotating by the reactance of water passing therethrough, a hose supplying water to said sprinkler, and operative means actuated by rotation of the sprinkler to effect step-by-step rotation of said ratchet wheel; said operative means including a frame-mounted projection extending inwardly and over said ratchet wheel and having apertures therein, spaced parallel guide bars slidable in said apertures, a cross-head connecting said guide bars, a downwardly curved ratchet tooth pivotally connected to said cross-head and engaging said ratchet wheel, and means connecting said rotary sprinkler with said cross-head to effect reciprocation of the cross-head.
2. A combined hose reel and sprinkler as set forth in claim 1 wherein the means connecting said rotary sprinkler with said cross-head includes a depending vertical shaft rotatably driven by said sprinkler, a pair of crank elements at the lower end of said shaft in overlying relation,
' the upper crank element being fixed to the lower end of saidshaft and the lower crank element having an eccentric pivotal connection to said upper crank element to efiect relative movement between the two crank elements, a wrist pin depending from said lower crank element, a crank arm connecting said wrist pin to the crosshead, and means for fixedly holding said crank elements in adjusted relation to thereby selectively vary the distance between the axes of the vertical shaft and wrist pin and thus vary the stroke of the cross-head.
3. In a combined hose reel and sprinkler, a ground wheel supported frame, a hose reel rotatably supported thereon, said reel having a shaft which is hollow for a portion of its length and adapted to have a water-supplying hose attached to the inner end of said hollow portion of the shaft, a rotary sprinkler supported by said stem positioned for axial sliding movement in said hollow portion of said shaft and extending outwardly of the reel to forman operating handle, and means to automatically close said valve and thereby shut oil the Water supply to the sprinkler upon the device traversing a desired length of ground.
