Abstract
1456043 Forming yarn reserves F M N SCHUSTER & CO 31 Oct 1973 [9 Nov 1972 18 June 1973 11 Oct 1973] 50560/73 Heading D1J Fig. 1a shows the start of a winding operation in which a thread 1 has its leading end positioned as at 1a by an operator to engage it in entrainment means 15 in a spool 5 driven by a friction roller 10. The direction of rotation of the spool 5 is such that slack would tend to appear in the thread 1 until the spool 5 has rotated to a setting in which the yarn enters the pinch between the roller 10 and the spool 5 and wind up commences. Such slack is prevented by a blower 16 blowing the slack for a short period in the form of a loop 1b into an open chamber. As wind up commences the loop 1b is drawn back until the thread adopts the straight line configuration shown in Fig. 1b. During this time a reserve winding is formed on the spool 5. As soon as the thread 1 becomes taut, the thread can slide over a deflector pin 24 and is automatically passed into a thread guide 8 of a traverse device 9. Thereafter the build-up of the thread package begins in known manner. During the formation of the thread package the blower 16 is out of action. The positioning of the deflector pin 24 and the intensity of the blower 16 determines the length of the reserve winding. Fig. 7 shows a modified embodiment in which the deflector pin 24 is replaced by a rotary worm 30 that may be freely rotatable or be pneumatically driven. The thread end is passed through a slot 39 to a spool 5 below the slot 39 and is secured in the spool groove 15 as before. Then as the spool commences to rotate a slack length is formed for a short period. This slack length is taken up by an air stream or jet 43 that blows a loop of thread into a chamber 21 and so maintains the thread in a state of tension. Continued rotation of the spool straightens out the thread and causes it to engage the smaller inner end of worm 30. The rotating worm 30 causes the thread to be laid as a thread reserve on the spool 5 and thereafter the thread leaves the worm 30 to be grasped by the oscillating thread guide 8. The speed of rotation of the worm 30 can be regulated by a throttle 34. Figs. 12 to 15 (not shown) show a device similar to that of Fig. 7 except that there is a retractable blocking device (48) that can delay the instant at which the thread is permitted to engage the worm 30, the purpose of the blocking device (48) being to ensure that there shall be a waste winding (57) on the spool 5 before the reserve winding (58) is formed. The waste winding (57) absorbs the thread that has not been wound up under correct tension as the spool 5 is building up to speed. The retractable blocking device may be a pin that is normally retracted to an inoperative position by spring means, an adjustable bleed valve determining the time taken for the pin to be moved to its inoperative position by the spring.
