Abstract
1393155 Administering medicaments ORTHO PHARMACEUTICAL CORP 15 May 1972 [17 May 1971] 22744/72 Heading A5R A device for delivering a medicament 2 to a body cavity comprises a member 1 which when inserted into the body cavity absorbs body fluid and expands, compressing a medicament containing tube 2 located within, around or on the member to dispense the medicament into the body cavity. The member may be formed from a polymeric substance e.g. cellulosic fibres or polymeric materials which itself expands when in contact with body fluids or from an expandible substance which contains a substance which expands when in contact with such fluids. The medicament containing zone may be a hollow in a cylindrical or prismatic member and the medicament may be contained in a collapsible tube 4 of aluminium or ptfe. The tube may be oval in cross-section and may have at least one internal rib or be formed of rectangular cross section to prevent complete flattening. The member may have an outer skin of flexible water permeable material having a high modulus of elasticity. A withdrawal thread 7 may be fitted. In a modification (Fig. 10 not shown) the tube (104) containing the medicament (103) is surrounded by rods (101) made from the stalk of laminaria seaweed which absorbs body fluid and expands. The tube 2 may be around the outside of the member 1, Figure 12 (not shown) or be located on the outer surface of the member 1, Figures 13 and 14 (not shown).
