Abstract

1389497 Magnetic switches HONEYWELL Inc 6 June 1972 [6 Aug 1971] 26400/72 Heading H1N A temperature responsive Curie point switch has a permanent magnet and a piece of ferrite material attracted to each other whilst the ferrite material is below its Curie point and the ferrite material is in intimate heat conducting relationship with a positive temperature coefficient resistor (PTC) with which it s electrically in series. In Fig. 1, the ferrite chip 18 co-operates with a permanent magnet 16 on a contact spring and is electrically in series with a PTC resistor 20. The chip and resistor may be mounted with thermally and electrically conductive layers on each side and between them between terminal members (Fig. 4, not shown). Fig. 5 shows contacts 51, 53 held closed by the attraction of a ferrite chip, on the contact spring 64, to a magnet 62. After heating above the Curie point has permitted the contacts to separate the switch can only be reset by operation of a retractively mounted push button, on which the permanent magnet is mounted, if the ferrite is below its Curie point. Arrangements such as that of Fig. 1 may be provided with two PTC resistors having respective switching temperatures above and below the ferrite Curie point.
