Abstract

1388793 Embossing by rolling TATA IRON & STEEL CO Ltd 16 May 1973 23343/73 Heading B3M A machine suitable for embossing an identification work on the end of a billet 3, Fig. 2, includes an embossing roll M which contacts the billet and is supported in a pivotable head 22 so that it can align itself with the billet even though the billet may be tilted. The head 22 is carried on a central spindle 15 which is vertically adjustable by a hand wheel and is biased downwardly by an adjustable spring 21. The billet may rest on a lower roller 5, or on part of a cooling bed. A spring assembly 63 biasses the head 22 towards a central non- inclined position. The assembly includes upper and lower tension springs, the upper of which is adjustable to set the initial inclination of the head. The roll M may act on the underside of a billet if desired, and is formed from a number of sets of discs 50, Fig. 7, held together by bolts 52. The hand wheel may, in an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) rotate the spindle 15 by means of a worm and worm-gear. An indicator dial may also be included for showing the vertical position of the roll.
