Abstract

1385184 Rolling mills BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 18 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971] 5577/71 Heading B3M [Also in Division G1] In an arrangement for testing moving hot material such as metal leaving a rolling mill the sensors are arranged to hover over the surface of the material on a fluid cushion formed by evaporation of a liquid. The sensors may provide signals for automatic or manual control of the mill. Each sensor 3 is supported on a pivotably mounted arm 4 and arranged to scan the rolled steel 2 by cam 8. Water flows through passageway 12 into chamber 13 and out through two rings of apertures arranged in face 14 where it is converted into steam by the hot rolled steel to give a gaseous cushion between the surface' 2 and face 14. When there is a change in level or profile of the top of rolled steel 2 the cushion changes its position to maintain a substantially constant distance between sensor 3 and rolled steel. Skid 11 deflects sensor 3 from tall projections. An auxiliary jet may be provided to sense an oncoming projection in advance and control the water supply, Fig. 7 (not shown). In an alternative form of sensor, Fig. 6 (not shown), the sensor is mounted on top of a movable spring biased hollow pillar, formation of the cushion being as in the first embodiment. The sensor 16 may be of the eddy current type shown in Specification 1,160,124 or a microwave cavity resonator completed by the top surface of the rolled steel, Fig. 5 (not shown). The sensor may be responsive to heat, light, ultra-violet, microwave γ or X-rays or ultrasonics the source being on one side of the material and the sensor on the opposite side.
