Abstract

1388704 Drying investment casting moulds NALCO CHEMICAL CO 4 Sept 1972 [10 Dec 1971] 40991/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division F4] Investment casting shell moulds are dried after coating and stuccoing by moving them through a fluidized bed of desiccant material, the desiccant being continuously removed, reactivated and returned to the bed in optimum condition for absorbing moisture from the slurry on the moulds. The desiccant, e.g. silica gel, is located in a tank 19, Fig. 2, above a porous plate to the space below which compressed air is supplied. The shell moulds are moved by gravity and pushers on a mono-rail conveyer 32 through coating and dipping stations, down into, through and up out of the tank 19. Desiccant is extracted from the tank through an inverted funnel and fed by a conduit 66 to a vertical tube 10, Fig. 5, leading to a hopper 74, hot gas and compressed air being supplied to the tube by inlet 71 and line 72 respectively. The reactivated desiccant is fed from the hopper 74 through an outlet 79 and a pipe into a cooling tower on to a porous plate below which compressed air is fed and in which rests an inverted funnel connected to a conduit leading back to the tank.
