Abstract
1,012,575. Treating mould and core materials. THE BRITISH CAST IRON RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. May 12, 1964 [May 25, 1963], No. 20986/63. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for treating sound or other granular material comprises a water-cooled tank 1 with an inlet shoot 12 and discharge shoot 11, the tank being divided longitudinally by watercooled partitions 7 which define a number of troughs 8. The bottom of the troughs is formed from a porous material or membrane 14 through which air or gas is passed, to fluidize the sand. At the end of the troughs adjacent the outlet 11 are adjustable weirs 9 which control the level of the sand passing through the troughs. The tank is closed at the top by a hood 17 which defines a dust collector space 18 and which is connected to a suction line 19 for removing the fines produced during the fluidizing process. The tank is resiliently mounted at 20 and is provided with vibrating means 21 to assist in the breaking up of lumps of sand or mould material. Spray means 41 and 42 for cooling and treating the sand respectively are provided and the apparatus may be used for cooling and treating mould materials or heating and drying the sand as in the embodiment shown in Fig. 9 which incorporates a burner 30 or other heating means. Alternative means of fluidizing and mechanically agitating the sand are described and include pipes with holes therein located in the trough bottoms (see Fig. 6) or a circular form of trough having rotatable arms positioned therein or the arms may be of suitably formed continuous lengths of pipe through which air or gas is passed so that fluidization and mechanical agitation may be effected simultaneously (see Figs. 14 to 16).
