Toothed wheels. - In worm gearing of the kind having a continuous string of balls circulating in one or more grooves in the worm faces, applicable for gun mountings, hoists, motor-vehicle driving- gear, &c., the ends of each groove are connected by a helical return passage g formed in a bush b fixed to the worm a. Passages connecting the groove d to the passage g are covered in by end plates i, which carry shaped metal pieces h to guide the balls. The opening of the groove d is smaller than the diameter of the balls, or, as shown in Fig. 5, the balls are retained in the groove by a wire f placed in a recess in one or both lips of the groove.
