1383959 Dressing grinding wheels MAAG GEAR WHEEL & MACHINE CO Ltd 20 April 1972 [21 April 1971] 18435/72 Heading B3D A device for dressing a grinding wheel 20 with an involute profile comprises a curved guide 8 over which a follower element is arranged to roll, a first slider element 11 mounted on the element thereby being constrained to describe an involute related to the axis of the curved guide, a radial guide 10 pivotable on the axis and slidably engaged by the slider element, a second slider element 12 also engaged by the radial guide 10 and attached to a toolholder 13 for the dressing tool 14, the relative positions of the slider elements being adjustable along the radial guide, the toolholder 13 being mounted on a slide 4 that is mounted on guides 6 on a support member 3 pivotable about the curved guide axis, and the follower member being carried by a further slide 5 that is supported for movement parallel to the toolholder slide 4 and relative to the support member 3. The curved guide 8 is fixed to a base 1 which has a shaft 2 supported in bearings 2a, the shaft also having a bearing 2b for the radial guide 10 which is the form of an arm having a radial slot 10a. The support member 3 is pivotally mounted on the shaft and has guides 6 for the toolholder slide 4 which, in turn, has guides 7 for the slide 5. The follower element is carried by the slide for engagement with the curved guide 8 and is connected to the guide by tension tapes 9. The slider element 11 is carried by the slide 5 and engages the slot 10a, and slider element 12 also engages the slot 10a and is adjustable therealong by a screw 16. The slider element 12 is connected to the toolholder 13, which has a diamond tool 14, the toolholder being adjustable with the element 12 along a slot 15a in a plate 15 which is of U-shaped form and straddles the arm 10 and is connected to the slide 4. A double acting ram 17, 19 is provided for driving the device. When the slide 4 is over the support 3, the follower element rolls over the curved guide 8, and the slider element 12 and, hence, the diamond 14, follows an involute curve corresponding to abase circle radius determined by its adjusted position relative to the slider element 11. For dressing a wheel for grinding a helical involute gear, the toolholder carries an adjustable support plate for a pair of slides each carrying a diamond tool.
