Abstract
1382219 Flock; stapling fibres MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 1 Oct 1973 [30 Sept 1972] 45777/73 Headings DIF and D1R A sliver 2 is made brittle by treatment with a refrigerant before being cut into 0.5 to 5mm flock by impact cutter 10. The sliver is unwound from reel 1, guided round non driven roll 4 in a water tank then passed between non driven rollers 5 to reduce its water content to 60%. The sliver is then sprayed with liquid nitrogen in refrigerating chamber 7 or passed through a bath of liquid refrigerant. The embrittled sliver is passed through driven rollers 8 to cutter 10. The frozen moisture holds the sliver together thereby producing flock of uniform length. Formation of a ball of material at the cut ends of the flock is also prevented by the refrigeration.
