Abstract
1380584 Scavenging vessels F A O WAREN 7 Jan 1972 [21 Jan 1971] 2898/71 Heading B7A Floating apparatus for removing buoyant foreign matter, e.g. oil, from water comprises an open bottomed tank 11 with its upper edge above water level and having side walls, a rear wall and a front wall 13 comprising a non-return valve in the form of a flap 19 extending between the side walls whose position, with its upper edge normally above water level, is determined by a float 21, the side walls of the tank extending forwardly of the non-return valve to define an inlet tract, and an impeller 22 in the tract for urging water and buoyant foreign matter across the non-return valve and into the tank. Prongs 29 are rotated by a shaft 30 to pick up large floating objects and deposit them on the deck. A plate 28 is pivoted about the shaft 30 and is positioned by a float so that the distance of the lower edge of the tract inlet beneath the water surface is constant. The deck 14 may be made of expanded polystyrene or may be a closed buoyancy chamber. The walls of the tank may be of resin bonded glass fibre. Booms may extend from the vessel to guide foreign matter towards the front inlet. The vessel may be self-powered or may be towed. In modifications, Figs. 3-6 (not shown), the vessel may be moored against a fixed structure to pick up matter floating towards it. The rear of the deck may have a slot through which accumulated foreign matter is forced from the tank for collection. The vessel may be semicircular in plan and have two inlets on its curved side. In further modifications (not shown), the vessel may have buoyancy tanks which support the main tank above the water while it is towed to its position of use, and the impeller may be in the form of an endless band which passes through the inlet tract.
