Abstract

1324433 Separating oil or debris from the surface of water G W F ROYAL 22 Nov 1971 [20 Aug 1970] 40113/70 Heading BID Oil is removed from the surface of water, e.g. the sea, by an apparatus comprising chamber 1 provided with floats 4 and a scoop 21 having a lip 3, the apparatus being moved through the water so that the oil and some water pass through inlet opening 2, which is covered by wire mesh or grid 20, into chamber 1 where the entrained water passes through filter 6 to outlet 12, while the oil passes through filter bed 23 and down ramp 24 to bags or hoses 26 which float on the surface of the water. The apparatus may be moved by an outboard motor, or it may be towed or pushed by a boat. Scoop 21 is adjustable vertically in suitable guides (not shown) so that the level of the lip 3 is disposed just below the level of an oil slick floating on the surface of the water. Means may be provided whereby scoop 21 adjusts itself automatically to follow variations in the surface level of oilcontaminated water, e.g. in the presence of a running swell. When small flotsam or seaweed is to be removed from the surface of water, grid 20 is removed and a wire-mesh basket is fitted in compartment 7. The walls of the separation chamber may be formed of plastics material or glass fibre reinforced plastics material. A static installation is described and illustrated (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) wherein the separation chamber contains a grid of pipes clad with hessian, the hessian coverings of adjoining pipes contacting each other to form a continuous filter bed, and wherein the oil is withdrawn from the chamber by a pump.
