Abstract
1379962 Tamperproof closures AUTOMATIC LIQUID PACKAGING Inc 14 June 1972 [26 Oct 1971] 27811/72 Heading B8T The end of an integrally sealed thermoplastic closure is severed from the container in unscrewing or screwing a cap or ring, threaded on the container neck, so that the contents of the container may be dispensed. The opened container may be resealed using the cap or ring together with the severed end which is retained within it. In Fig. 5 a ring 10 has coarse thread 13 in its sidewall and a fine thread 16 on an inner depending wall 25 provided with a cutting edge 27. The neck 22 of the container 20 has a threaded portion 23 integral with a narrower threaded portion 24 and terminates in a sealed conical tip 28. The ring 10 is screwed on the container, threads 13, 16 engaging threaded portions 23, 24, respectively. As the ring is further screwed down, the cutting edge 27 cuts through the annular top wall of the neck 21 and this wall is bent over and forced into the space 19 between the wall 25 and the sidewall of the ring to form a seal. As the ring is unscrewed the tip 28 is removed with it, being held by the thread 16, thereby providing a re-usable closure. The container may have an integral sealing cap 48, Fig. 8, joined by a neck 49 to a threaded portion 47. As the ring 40 is screwed on, the shoulder 44 snaps over the cap 48, but when the ring is unscrewed the cap 48 is severed from the container and retained within the ring so that the cap 48 and ring can together be used to reseal the container. An annular, metal or rigid plastics cutting blade, Fig. 9 (not shown), may be forcefitted into an annular groove in the side wall of the cap to sever and retain the cap 48. In Fig. 11 a ring 65 has a coarse thread 69 and a fine thread 67, and the container has correspondingly threaded portions 60, 58, respectively, separated by a reduced neck 62. The ring is initially screwed on until the fine thread 67 and threaded portion 58 just engage. The container is opened by further screwing on the ring until the strain imposed on the neck 62 by the differential screwing rates of the fine and coarse threads severs it. The ring together with the portion 68 can be unscrewed and used to reseal the container. The inner wall of a cap (70) may have a cutting blade (73), Fig. 12 (not shown), positioned so that, after the cap has been screwed down and the blade (73) has cut through the annular top wall of a threaded portion (31) of the neck, the blade retains the severed end (38) within the cap as the cap is unscrewed.
