1378802 Railway systems GERMANY MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT 24 April 1972 18979/72 Heading B7L A railway marshalling yard system comprises sequentially a run-in zone I, a feed zone II and a collecting zone III having synchronized wagon propulsion means 1, 4 and 8 respectively, there being, in the run-in zone I, mechanism 2 for preliminary inspection of a wagon to collect operational data such as its intended destination and information concerning its mechanical condition, and in the feed zone II the propulsion means 4 being an endlessly revolving wagon transporting mechanism (two of which are employed in the symmetrical arrangement of Fig. 1) arranged transversely with respect to tracks of the run-in and collecting zones and comprising transfer cars 21, each of which is adapted to carry a wagon 14 and has retractable arresting or locking devices 6 for retaining wagons thereon in response to the inspection mechanism 2. The transfer cars 21 may be connected endlessly by joints 9 and be mounted on rollers 12 which are held in guide rails 11, there being track lengths 10 on the cars 21 for the wagons 14. The transporting mechanism 4 has a return path which may be above (as shown) or underground. The laterally outermost tracks 15 of classification or direction tracks 7 in the collecting zone III are repair tracks in which repair of wagons 14 may be carried out. The propulsion means 1 in the run-in zone I also serves to uncouple the wagons while the propulsion means 8 in the collecting zone III may couple wagons. The means 1 or 8 may be provided with a test coupling to test for wear and correct operation of the automatic central buffer coupling of a wagon.
