Abstract

1378482 Soil working and compressing members C VAN DER LELY NV 15 Dec 1971 [18 Dec 1970] 58351/71 Heading A1B [Also in Division F2] A rotary soil compressing member. 1 for consolidating soil worked by members 22 comprises a set of circumferentially spaced elongated elements 8 extending parallel to the axis of rotation and adjustably disposed in a variable helical manner. The member 1 has a central rotary shaft 2 with six equally spaced octagonal plate-like supports 3, 4 secured along it. An arm 6 on the edge of each support has a hole at its end through which an element 8, which may be tubular and made of spring steel, passes. Successive supports 3, 4 are angularly displaced by 18‹. Transverse pins 9 through opposite ends of tube 8 beyond plates 3 prevent lateral movement, but the tubes are free to rotate in the holes in arms 6. The height of element 1 with respect to the frame of the cultivator can be altered to set the depth of penetration of soil working members 22. Shaft 2 is journalled in arms 10 which are pivoted at opposite ends of beam 10A. A pin 13 attached to each arm 10 is displaceable in a slot 12 by means of a spindle 16. In sticky soil, alternate tubes 8 may be removed after withdrawing the appropriate pins 9. Vertical soil working members 22 are arranged and driven as' described in U.K. Specification 1,226,679 and the lateral plates 20 are as described in U.K. Specification 1,277,679. In one alternative embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) plates 3, 4 are replaced by plates (33) with eight circumferential projections which each have a U-shaped recess (34). Tube 8 is held by pins (35) across each recess and at its ends by pins (36A). In another embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), a support at one end of shaft (40) is rigidly fixed to it. The five other support plates are rotatable about the shaft, and that (41) at the opposite end has a curved slot (42) in which a bolt (43), fastened to a support plate (44) which is rigid with shaft (40), can be loosened allowing support (41) to be adjusted rotatably and varying the angle of inclination of the helically wound elements relative to the axis of rotation. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specifications 1,277,679, 1,226,680 and 1,226,679.
