1376964 Invalid lifting devices J W SPIVEY 4 July 1972 [16 July 1971] 31254/72 Heading B8H An invalid lift apparatus comprises head and foot frames 16, 17 on which are mounted vertically movable supports 19, 20 respectively to which a rectangular lift frame 18 is attached, the frame 18 having a sheet 114 detachably secured thereto, on which a patient is supported. The support 19 is connected to a tube 32 which is slidingly mounted on a tube 26 mounted in the interior of the head frame 16, movement of the tube 32 and thus the support 19 along the tube 26 being effected by means of a cable 42 which passes about a movable pulley 36 mounted on the tube 32 and also about stationary pulleys 38, 40 on the head frame 16. Similarly the support 20 of the foot frame 17 is mounted on a tube 70 adapted to slide along a tube 66 under the action of the same cable 42 which is attached at one of its ends to a motor driven winch 82, passing first about stationary pulleys 68, 81 from which it passes to the stationary pulleys 40, 38 on the head frame 16 and then passes about the movable pulley 36 to extend vertically and pass through a boom 21 rotatably mounted on the head frame 16, the end 42a of the cable 42 which depends from the end of the boom 21 having a lift bar 22 attached thereto. When it is desired to raise the frame 18 relative to the frames 16, 17 the cable end 42a is anchored, for example to the boom 21 or head frame 16, the winch 82 is actuated to draw in the cable 42 which, because of the arrangement of stationary pulleys on both frames 16, 17 causes the pulleys 36, 78 and thus the tubes 32, 70 and supports 19, 20 to be raised. If it is desired to raise only one end of the frame 18 the other end of the frame is prevented from making vertical movement on actuation of the winch 82 by means of one of two drift pins (161, 159), Figs. 1, 4 respectively (not shown), which is inserted into its associated tube 66 or 26 just above the associated respective tube 70, 32. If both said pins are inserted into their respective tubes, operation of the winch 82 does not result in a raising or lowering of the supports 19, 20, instead the length of the cable depending from the end of the boom 21 is either increased or decreased. This is of advantage when it is desired to lift an invalid completely out of the bed B. In this case a further lift bar 22a is connected by cables 162 to the lift bar 22, Fig. 11, the bars 22, 22a being attached to the end and an intermediate part respectively of the sheet 114 which then sets as a sling to support the invalid on raising the bars by means of the winch 82, and as the invalid is lifted from the bed the boom 21 can be swung to either side of the bed to position the invalid over a wheel chair for example. Stabilizing frames (144, 152), Fig. 1 (not shown), having ground engaging castors (151) are mounted on the foot and head frames respectively, the head and foot frames each being provided respectively with castors 136, 138.
