Abstract
637,956. Load-handling appliances. CORBETT, R. H. S. June 7, 1948, Nos. 15373/48 and 7676/49. [Class 78 (iii)] A lifting mechanism which comprises in combination a jib adapted to be raised and lowered and a cradle arranged to receive and support the object to be lifted which comprises two arms inclined to one another mounted at the free end of the jib in such a manner that as the jib is raised so the cradle is raised and at the same time the arm which normally lies in a substantially horizontal position is moved into an inclined position. The chassis 5 supports a jib 4 slidably mounted on a vertical guide member and movable by a hydraulic ram 7. A cradle having inclined bell crank arms 2, 3 are mounted on a pivot 8 on the jib 4. The arms have rollers 9, 13 at their ends. Pins projecting from the arms move along horizontal guides 12 as the jib is raised so that the cradle pivots about the pivot 8. Slots are provided in the guides 12 to allow the cradle to rise freely after pivoting. Supplementary guides may be provided to allow unloading at either side and the jib may be held at any height, independently of the ram, by means of a rack arrangement attached to the vertical guide. In a modified form, Fig. 6, the jib 1 is pivotally mounted and is swung by a ram 9 the jib having an extensible arm 16 with screw adjusting means 11.
