1375096 Loading ships FIVES LILLE-CAIL 3 Feb 1972 [8 Feb 1971 11 June 1971] 5204/72 Heading B8E Apparatus for unloading bulk-material from ships comprises a jib 16, Fig. 1, which supports an elevator tube 18 and is itself supported on a travelling gantry 10 by carriages 20, 22 connected together by a cable 53 so that they move synchronously in the same direction. Material is fed to a conveyer 82 by conveyers 78, 80 and a hopper 76. As described the carriage 20, Fig. 3, is driven by pinions 32 which engage a track 34. The jib is raised by a cable 46 one end of which is attached to a winch 44, the other end being fixed to a counterweight 48. The latter carries a pinion 50 which meshes with a rack 52 carried by the carriage 22. Part of the weight of the jib is balanced by a weight 60. If the bucket wheels 74 hit the bottom of the ship the reduction of tension in the cable 53 is detected by a device 51 which stops the winch 44 and rotates the pinion 50 to move the counterweight 48 downwards thereby rapidly raising the jib. The carriage 22 may be driven instead of the carriage 20. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, a pivoted strut is provided on a carriage 120 which is connected to the carriage by a cable 153 passing over pulleys 154, 156, 158, so that the strut remains parallel to itself as the carriage 120 moves too and fro. The jib may be counterbalanced and a safety device may be provided described with reference to Fig. 3.
