Abstract

1374335 Gas-liquid separator BENNETT PUMP Inc 8 March 1972 [26 March 1971] 8 8 March 1972 10745/72 Heading B2P An apparatus for removing a gas from a liquid comprises a separating chamber 40 having an inlet 76, an outlet and a substantially circular cross-section; a scavenging tube 41 supported coaxially within the chamber with an inlet 41a positioned between the inlet 76 and the outlet of the chamber and with an outlet 43 leading to the exterior of the chamber; the chamber being constructed such that rotary and axial flow of gas-laden liquid occurs therein when supplied under pressure thereto, the flow being such that a portion of the liquid containing the gas is caused to flow through the scavenging tube 41; a cavity B for receiving the remainder of the liquid from the outlet of the chamber, the cavity B having two outlets 23, 24 closed by respective biased valves, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), to supply said remainder of the liquid either to dispensing means, or to return it to the inlet of the chamber; and means C for receiving the portion of the liquid containing the gas from the outlet 43 of the scavenging tube 41, for separating the gas from said liquid portion and for returning the latter to the inlet of the chamber. The apparatus may be used in a gasoline dispensing installation to separate air and vapour from an underground storage tank. The separating chamber 40 forms part of a cavity A which, with cavity B and cavity C (constituting the receiving means for the gascontaining liquid portion), is formed in a housing 20. Gasoline containing air and vapour is sucked from an underground tank through an inlet 21 and a filter (F), Fig. 4 (not shown), by a belt-driven vane-type pump 30 which delivers it under pressure via the inlet 76 to the cyclone-type chamber 40 where due to centrifugal action caused by the swirl imparted to the gasoline separation takes place. The major portion of the gasoline, devoid of air and vapour, flows past the tube 41 into cavity B which it leaves either through a spring-biased valve-controlled outlet 23 to a delivery hose and dispensing nozzle, or through a spring- biased by-pass valve controlled outlet 24 back to the suction side of the pump into cavity A if the pump flow exceeds the delivery out of the dispensing nozzle. A minor portion of the gasoline together with the air and vapour is discharged through the tube 41 and outlet 43 into cavity C where the air and vapour are vented through an outlet 22. When sufficient pure gasoline has accumulated in cavity C, a float valve 71 is actuated whereby gasoline in the lower portion of the cavity is returned to cavity A in the region of the suction side of the pump 36 through a tapered orifice 70a, 70b.
