Abstract

1372818 Method of feeding bar-stock R MAURER 29 May 1973 [1 June 1972] 25411/73 Heading B3B A method of positioning and feeding bar stock prior to machining in an automatic lathe having a movable headstock and bar holding and feeding devices comprises the steps of providing clamping means 6 for a bar holder 4, the clamping means being movable along the axial direction of the bar stock towards and away from the headstock limiting the path of movement of the clamping means by way of an adjustable stop 10 between a first position farthest from the headstock and a second position close to the headstock, positioning the headstock whereby when gripping means 1 in the headstock is in its closed position the leading end of a fed bar 3 which abuts against an abutment surface 3a in the gripping means 1 is located at a distance L from a parting off tool 2. The adjustable stop 10 is then set so that the path of movement of the clamping means is equal to the distance L. The gripping means 1 is then closed and the clamping means 6 is opened so that a bar feed means urges the bar 3 into abutment with the abutment surface 3a. The gripping means 1 is then opened and the clamping means 6 is closed whilst in its first position and is subsequently moved to its second position to bring the leading end of the bar 3 flush with the parting off tool, closing the gripping means and opening the clamping means and moving the clamping means back to its first position.
