Abstract
1372292 Polymer carbon BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 1 Feb 1972 [2 Feb 1971] 4569/72 Heading C1A A hard, abrasion resistant carbon is obtained by thermally treating polyvinylidene chloride so as to eliminate hydrogen chloride therefrom, not less than 5% by weight and not more than 50% by wt. of hydrogen chloride based on the total eliminatable amount of hydrogen chloride being eliminated in a first stage at a temperature within the range of from 140 to 250 C. and further elimination being carried out in a second stage in an inert or reducing gaseous atmosphere at a temperature above 250 C. The preferred temperature in the second stage is 600 to 950 C. Preferably a shaped piece of polyvinylidene chloride is used as the starting material. The product may be used as the stationary phase in the chromatographic separation and analysis of mixtures. The second stage of the process may be continued until the chlorine content of the carbon has fallen to value below 50 p.p.m. by wt. The product may be graphitized by heating above 1800 C., oxidized with HNO3, or activated by treatment with CO2 and steam. The porosity may be adjusted by the pyrolytic deposition of carbon.
