Abstract

1370593 Plasma-spray coating BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 14 March 1973 [16 March 1972] 12292/73 Heading C7F [Also in Divisions B2 and H5] A plasma spray torch for producing a plasma jet 14 containing particulate material to be sprayed with the use of an electric arc, comprises a cathode 1, a nozzle 2 through which a working gas flows and which is connected as an anode, and means for pulsating in synchronism the flow of working gas through the nozzle 2 and the current of the arc. During each pulse the pressure of the working gas is more than two atmospheres, preferably twenty atmospheres, and the arc current has a value of more than one kA, preferably twenty kA, and between each pulse the pressure and current values are close to or equal to zero. The cathode 1 is reciprocated to open or close the nozzle 2 by means of a cam and lever arrangement 10, 11, but alternatively, the cathode may be reciprocated by magnetic means (not shown). The arc current is switched on when the nozzle 2 is open by means of a switch 13 controlled by the cam 11. The nozzle 2 is of the Laval type and is water cooled. The particulate material to be sprayed is 10-100Á in size and tungsten may be sprayed on to brass or tungsten carbide on to steel.
