[Also in Division H1] In an electron beam welding or cutting machine the beam is brought from the evacuated gun region 10 to impinge on the workpiece 30 in a region at relatively high pressure through a series of chambers 18, 24 maintained at intermediate pressures, and the wall of the opening 28 into the chamber 24 is either provided with a jet valve 38, or is shaped, Fig. 2 (not shown) in combination with a probe (22) leading to the chamber 18 to form a diverging nozzle (48), so that the inflowing gas is deflected away from the axis of the beam.
