Abstract

1,069,791. Cutting and welding by fusion. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Oct. 30, 1963 [Nov. 5, 1962], No. 42758/63. Headings B3R and B3V. [Also in Divisions F2 and H1] In the drilling, welding or surface treating of a workpiece 50 by a focused beam 12 of charged particles produced in a vacuum chamber 22, the latter is sealed from the workpiece by supersonic flow of pressurized gas in a passage 33. The beam is generated at 10, focused by electromagnetic or electrostatic means 14 and passed through openings 16, 20 to the workpiece 50. Vacuum chamber 22 is evacuated by pump 26. Pressurized sealing gas from source 28 is passed at supersonic speed through convergentdivergent nozzle 40 into passage 33 where it creates shock waves such as 37 to produce a differential pressure zone increasing from 16 to 18. The gas is discharged through passages 43, 45 and returned to the source through pipes 46. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the sealing gas is supplied through an annular nozzle and discharges through opening 120.
