Abstract
1,244,570. Arc extinguishing in switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 23 July, 1969 [3 Sept., 1968], No. 37065/69. Heading H1N. Arc runners 30, 31, Fig. 1, spaced apart within a shoot between insulating side walls 21 have coatings 32 of thermally sprayed refractory metal such as W, Mo, WC or MoC. The runners may be cleaned by grit blasting and initially given a plasma arc spray coating of W or Mo powder mixed with high conductivity powders of Cu or Ag. A small percentage of titanium hydride may also be added to reduce oxidation. A final layer of the pure refractory metal may then be added. Thicker coatings may be applied in the region of brazed on electrodes 60 and near the insulating spacers 36 between arc blow-out coils 37, 38. The electrodes 60 are provided for assisting the arc 29 to jump from the high resistance auxiliary arcing contact 7 to the upper runner 30 to which the current flows from fixed electrode 1 through a further blow-out coil 40. A corresponding blow-out coil 45 is provided for the second fixed electrode 2 to which it is connected by loop 56.
