Abstract

1369597 Valve gear A J SNELL and T G BAILEY 17 Jan 1972 [17 Oct 1970] 49402/70 Heading F1B Valve gear for twin cylinder I.C. engine comprising valve rockers each of which acts on a valve and has a cam follower engaging axially opposed cam surfaces provided by the sides of a peripheral groove in a rotary cam, the cam having one groove which receives two followers arranged 180 degrees out of phase for operating the inlet valves and a second groove which receives two followers arranged 180 degrees out of phase for operating the exhaust valves. Cam 21 rotates about an axis at right angles to the axes of the rocker shafts, and has a groove 22 which receives a cam follower integral with the rocker arm 16. The rocker arm for the other valve is driven by a second groove 23. For a twocylinder in-line engine, the shaft supporting the rocker 16 may also carry a further rocker, the follower of which is situated on the other side of the cam so that in relation to the rotation of the cam it is displaced by 180 degrees. Similarly, the cam groove 23 can drive two rockers. The valve-actuating end of the rocker has inturned parts 15 which engage in an annular groove in a cap 11 secured to the valve stem by collets 12. The valve is positively opened and positively closed. Valve clearance is adjusted by a screw 17, locked by a nut 18. A light spring 14 biases the valve to the closed position.
