Abstract
1369452 Acetic acid CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 3 Dec 1971 [5 Dec 1970] 56177/71 Heading C2C In the preparation of acetic acid by catalytic gas phase oxidation of butene or a mixture of butenes with molecular oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of steam at elevated temperature the product stream is divided into a first stream which is recycled and a second stream from which acetic acid is separated. The waste gas may be divided and a portion thereof mixed with the first stream in a ratio of 0À1 : 1 to 0À4 : 1 and passed to the reactor. The proportion of butene in the reactor gas mixture should not fall below a value of 0À4% by volume, preferably not below 0À8% by volume. Air or pure molecular oxygen may be used at a pressure of 10 to 40 atmospheres.
