Abstract
1356331 Acetic acid STAMICARBON NV 27 Sept 1971 [6 Oct 1970 (2)] 44936/71 Heading C2C Acetic acid is prepared by oxidizing n-butene with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of steam at above 200‹ C. and a pressure greater than 2 bars in the presence of a supported tin oxide-molybdenum oxide catalyst. The tin oxide is in the form of particles of not more than 50 Š average diameter and the gaseous reaction mixture contains an O 2 /n-butene ratio of from 1 : 1 to 12 : 1 and a steam/n-butane ratio of from 2 : 1 to 10 : 1, the conditions of supply and reaction being such that the gaseous reactants in the reaction space comprise more than 2% by volume of n-butene and less than 11% by volume of oxygen. A fixed bed or fluidized reactor may be used for a gaseous feed stream of more than 2% of n-butene and less than 11% of oxygen, but for a feed stream of more than 11% of oxygen and less than 2% butene, a second feed stream of n-butene is used. By-product maleic acid, methyl ethyl ketone, and acetaldehyde may be present and the ratio of tin oxide to molybdenum oxide may be from 4 : 1 to 1 : 4 and silica, alumina, titania, clay or pumice may be used as carriers.
