Abstract

Acetic acnd maleic acids are prepd as by-products in gas phase oxidation of n-butenes at >200 degrees C in the presence of a catalyst system contg. MoO3 and >=10% of SnO2 in which the SnO2 is on a thermostable support, e.g. SiO2, with a particle size of =50A. O2 and n-butanes are introduced into the reactor in the molar ratio of 1:1-12:1 as well as steam: n-butene at 2:1-10:1, and the mixed gases contain >2% by vol. of n-butenes and 11% by vol. of O2, or the gas mixture consists of several separate mixtures of gases some rich, some poor in O2, and those rich in O2 contain is not >2% of n-butene, and also one of those poor in O2 is used to fluidise the catalyst bed. The reaction is carried out at a press >=2 bars. with each passage through the reactor >=20% of the n-butenes are converted to acetic acid, and a small quantity is converted to acetic acid, and a small quantity is converted to maleic acid.
