Abstract

1424486 Acetic acid KURARAY CO Ltd 11 Jan 1974 [13 Jan 1973] 01520/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Acetic acid is formed by the gas phase oxidation of a butene over a vanadium oxidetitanium oxide catalyst in which more than 50% of the titania is in the rutile form and made by calcining at 400-600‹ C. an intimate mixture formed by mixing an aqueous solution of a vanadium compound and a titania hydrogel which on drying at 250‹ C. will give titania of a crystallite size of not more than 70 Š as measured by the Schepper method based on X-ray diffraction. The examples describe oxidizing butene- 1 using a fluidized bed reactor, a temperature of 256-272‹ C. and a feed gas containing 67 Nl./hr. air, 67 Nl/hr. of steam and 3À4 Nl./hr. of butene-1, the gaseous product being passed through a condenser to separate water and acetic acid.
