Abstract

Vinyl acetate is prepared by reacting ethylene, acetic acid and molecular oxygen in the gas phase, at temperatures between 120‹ and 250‹ C., under a pressure of between 1 and 10 atmospheres absolute, in the presence of a carrier catalyst containing metallic palladium and metallic gold, and in which the reaction is carried out continuously in the presence of a cycle gas containing 5 to 60% by volume carbon dioxide. The vinyl acetate, water, and unreacted acetic acid are then liberated and isolated in the vapour form by a process which comprises condensing the said compounds under pressure, continuously recycling, as a cycle gas to the reaction zone, the residual reaction gas formed substantially of unreacted ethylene, unreacted oxygen and carbon dioxide, allowing the carbon dioxide content of the cycle gas, which increases during each passage through the reaction zone, to increase to a predetermined value between 5 and 60% by volume, and continuously freeing the reaction gas and/or residual reaction gas from carbon dioxide in excess of that predetermined value.
