Beispiel 1 (Vergleichsbeispiel in diskontinuierlicher Arbeitsweise)
Process for the production of vinyl acetate
It is known to produce vinyl acetate by reacting ethylene, acetic acid and molecular oxygen or
Air in the gas phase at temperatures between 120 and 2500 C, preferably 150 and 2000 C, and at pressures between 1 and 10 ata on palladium-containing supported catalysts that contain either pure palladium or palladium as well as other noble metals of the 8th group of the periodic table (platinum , Rhodium, ruthenium, iridium) in combination with activating elements, including in particular gold, but also copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, cobalt or nickel. As a carrier z. B. silica (SiO2), kieselguhr, aluminum oxide, aluminum silicate, aluminum phosphate, pumice stone, asbestos, silicon carbide or activated carbon in question.
It is also known that the palladium-containing supported catalysts contain a certain proportion of alkali or alkaline earth salts, e.g. B. lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium or cesium acetates, individually or as a mixture, must contain in order to achieve satisfactory space-time yields.
The processes taking place in the formation of vinyl acetate can be summarized by the following equation
EMI1.1
<tb> <SEP> Pd catalyst
<tb> CH2 = CH2 <SEP> t <SEP> CH3COOH <SEP> t <SEP> 1/202 <SEP>> <SEP> CH2 = CHOOCCH3 <SEP> + <SEP> H2O

From the reaction gas leaving the reactor, the condensate portions, which consist of vinyl acetate formed, unreacted acetic acid and water, are removed by cooling under a pressure of 1 to 20 atmospheres. The condensate is worked up by distillation in a known manner. This work-up by distillation is particularly simple since, apart from a combustion fraction to carbon dioxide of 7 to 13%, based on the 7 to 14% converted ethylene, and a negligibly small amount of acetaldehyde, the vinyl acetate is the only product.
The residual reaction gas, which contains unconverted ethylene, oxygen and carbon dioxide, is now fed back into the reactor as recycle gas after the addition of fresh ethylene, oxygen and acetic acid vapor. In this way, a cycle gas is obtained in which a high carbon dioxide content is quickly established due to the combustion fraction of about 1X of the ethylene used. The removal of carbon dioxide from the residual reaction gas can be carried out in the usual way in a potassium carbonate scrub according to the equation
EMI1.2
be made.
It should be noted, however, that the residual reaction gas coming from the condensation stage entrains acetic acid and vinyl acetate according to the partial pressure, which react with the potassium carbonate solution as follows:
2CH3COOH + KqC03 <2CH3COOK + H2O + CO2; 2CH, = CH-OOC-CH3 + H OK2CO3 2CH2CHO + 2CH3COOK + CO2.
The interposition of a special wash between the condensation stage and the potassium carbonate wash means an additional, cost-raising, apparatus expenditure that makes the entire process less economical.
According to Belgian patent no. 638489, it is also known that the starting gas mixture can also contain a diluent such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide or air. According to Belgian patent no. 661 465, ethylene can finally be used in its pure form or in a mixture with inert gases such as nitrogen, ethane or carbon oxides.
In contrast, the invention now relates to a process for the production of vinyl acetate by reacting ethylene, acetic acid and molecular oxygen in the gas phase at temperatures from 120 to 2500C and pressures of 1 to 10 ata on supported catalysts containing metallic palladium and metallic gold, which is characterized in that the reaction is carried out continuously and in the presence of 5 to 60% by volume of carbon dioxide in the cycle gas. In particular, the supported catalyst contains 0.1 to 6.0, preferably 0.5 to 2.0% by weight of palladium and 0.01 to 10% by weight, preferably 0.1 to 2% by weight of gold.
In addition, platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, osmium, copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, cobalt or nickel can be contained as further components.
An expedient embodiment of the invention consists in condensing the resulting vinyl acetate, water and the unreacted acetic acid vapors under a pressure of 1 to 20 ata from the reaction gas and separating the residual reaction gas, which mainly contains unreacted ethylene, unreacted oxygen and carbon dioxide Fresh ethylene, oxygen and vaporous acetic acid are continuously fed back into the reaction zone as cycle gas, which increases the carbon dioxide content of the cycle gas, which increases with each passage due to secondary reactions, to a desired value between 5 and 60% by volume and only the percentage that exceeds this value removed by continuous separation of carbon dioxide from the reaction gas and / or the residual reaction gas.
This can be done by condensing vinyl acetate, water and unreacted acetic acid vapors as well as the carbon dioxide dissolved therein at temperatures from -30 to at a certain carbon dioxide content in the circulating gas, which is between 20 and 60% by volume +300 C and pressures of 3 to 20 ata removed from the reaction gas.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, due to a high COr content in the circulating gas, the installation of a CO2 removal can be completely dispensed with, since in this case the amount of condensate occurring under pressure in the condensation stage is able to dissolve the newly formed carbon dioxide and thus to be removed from the reaction gas. If necessary, the gas mixture escaping from the crude vinyl acetate condensate after the pressure release can be separated into carbon dioxide and ethylene in order to recover the ethylene dissolved in the condensate.
The separation device required for this is not expensive, since the CO2 concentration in the escaping exhaust gas is greater than in the reaction gas entering the condensation stage due to the higher solubility of the condensate for carbon dioxide compared to ethylene.
On the other hand, if the carbon dioxide content in the circulating gas is between 5 and 60% by volume, the percentage of PfO in excess of this value can be removed by introducing a partial flow of the residual carbon dioxide-containing reaction gas into a carbonate scrubber, for example an aqueous potassium carbonate solution, and this now Combine carbon dioxide-free substream with the carbon dioxide-containing part of the residual reaction gas or the cycle gas. In this case, 1 to 50 preliminary% of the carbon dioxide-containing residual reaction gas is preferably introduced as a substream into the carbonate scrubber.
The process of the invention can be carried out in the presence of alkali metal and / or alkaline earth metal acetates, preferably in an amount of from 0.5 to 20% by weight, based on the supported catalyst.
Example 1 (comparative example in batch mode)
1 liter of silica support in spherical shape with a diameter of 4 mm is mixed with an aqueous solution containing 4 g of Pd as PdCl2 and 1.5 g of Au as H (AuCl4) and thoroughly soaked. It is then dried with stirring in order to achieve an even distribution of the noble metal salts on the support and the dry mass is slowly added to a 4- to 5% hydrazine hydrate solution at 400.degree.
After the reduction of the noble metal compounds has ended, the supernatant liquid is poured off, washed thoroughly with distilled water and the still moist contact is added to an 11% potassium sodium acetate solution (molar ratio CH3COOK: CH3COONa = 1). After the excess alkali acetate solution has been decanted off, the contact is dried in vacuo at 600 C.
This catalyst produced in this way, which contains 0.71% by weight of Pd, 0.27% by weight of Au, 1.5% by weight of Na as CHgCOONa and 3% by weight K as CH3COOK, is placed in a tube made of 18/8 chromium-nickel steel of 25 mm lunar diameter, in which there is a core tube made of the same material with an outer diameter of 14 mm for accommodating thermal resistors for temperature measurement, filled in and kept at 1700 ° C. by temperature control of the tube.
800 N1 per hour of a gas mixture consisting of 22 S CH3COOH vapor, 6% oxygen and 72% ethylene are passed through the vertical pipe at a pressure of 6 ata, in a single pass without recirculation of the unreacted ethylene. From the reaction gas leaving the reaction tube, the condensable components are yeast condensed out by cooling to 200 ° C. at a pressure of 6 ata, with subsequent condensation at -700 ° C., and analyzed analytically.
125 to 130 g of vinyl acetate are obtained per hour, corresponding to a space-time yield of
125 to 130 g vinyl acetate / l contact. H. After the acetic acid and vinyl acetate have condensed out, the residual reaction gas consists of ethylene, oxygen and 1.2% CO2. The yield of vinyl acetate is 90%, based on the ethylene converted to 7.85%. After a period of 30 days, no decrease in performance can be observed.
Example 2 (example with a COO content of 2 vol. O in the cycle gas) 0.80 Nm3 of a gas mixture of the same composition at 6 ata and 1700 ° C. are passed every hour over 11 of the same catalyst described in Example 1. The reaction gas leaving the reactor is passed through a condensation stage operated at 6 ata and -120 ° C., and the residual reaction gas leaving this is passed through a potassium carbonate scrubber.
The potassium carbonate scrubber is operated at around 700 C so that the cycle gas still contains around 2% Co2 after fresh ethylene, oxygen and acetic acid vapor have been added. With the same contact performance as in Example 1, no damage to the catalyst can be found after an operating period of over 40 days, which would be caused by the higher CO3 content of 2% upstream of the reactor and 3.2% downstream of the condensation stage. Despite cooling the reaction gas to -120 C at 6 ata pressure, 7 g of vinyl acetate and 1 g of acetic acid per hour go through saponification or saponification in the potassium carbonate wash.
Neutralization lost. Calculated as bound or
free acetic acid, this corresponds to a total loss of 6.5% of the converted acetic acid.
Example 3 (with 10 vol.% CO2 in the cycle gas)
Under the conditions of Example 2, the circulating gas is circulated without the interposition of a potassium carbonate scrubber until a CO2 content of 10% has set up in front of the reactor.
After the reactor, the reaction gas contains about 11 to 11.5% CO2. A substream (12.2% = 70Nl / h) of the residual reaction gas is washed almost free of carbon dioxide in a potassium carbonate wash at about 700 ° C. downstream of the condensation stage and returned to the circuit. Calculated as bound or
Free acetic acid, the vinyl acetate and acetic acid losses are now only 0.85% of the converted acetic acid.
A reduction in contact performance due to the CO3 content of 10% by volume in the circulating gas cannot be determined after an operating time of 35 days. It is on average 125 g vinyl acetate / l contact h.
Example 4 (with 20 vol.% CO; in the cycle gas)
An experiment as described in Examples 2 and 3, in which, however, the CO content in the circulating gas is allowed to rise to 20%, leads to the same results in terms of contact performance. A partial flow of about 35 N1 residual reaction gas is introduced into the potassium carbonate scrubber, which corresponds to about 6.5% of the total amount of residual reaction gas. The vinyl acetate and acetic acid losses in the potassium carbonate wash are - calculated as acetic acid - in the order of magnitude of 0.2 to 0.5% of the converted acetic acid.
Example 5 (with 30% vol.% CO2 in the cycle gas)
As a result of the increase in the CO3 content to 30% in the circulating gas, no reduction in the contact performance can yet be determined, which is in the order of magnitude of 120 to 130 g vinyl acetate / l contact h.
In the crude vinyl acetate condensates obtained, more than 50% of the carbon dioxide to be removed is dissolved at a pressure of 6 ata. When the pressure is increased to 11 ata, the newly formed carbon dioxide dissolves completely in the condensates, which is why the CO2 content in the cycle gas cannot exceed 30% by volume. In this case, washing with potassium carbonate is not necessary.
