1365421 Macrocyclic compounds E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 13 Jan 1972 [14 Jan 1971] 1730/72 Headings C2C and C2J [Also in Division C3] Novel macrocyclic polyether compounds of the formula wherein T is C 2 -C 3 alkylene; A is R-C-H, R being H C 1 -C 18 alkyl, C 5 -C 6 cycloalkyl, cyclohexylmethyl, C 6 -C 14 aryl, benzyl or furyl, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> being independently C 1 -C 18 alkyl, C 2 -C 4 alkenyl, or C 6 -C 14 aryl optionally substituted by halogen; benzyl or cycloalkenyl, or R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are joined to form a C 4 or C 5 alkylene group; Q and Z are independently 1,2-arylene, saturated derivatives of 1,2-arylene, substituted 1,2-arylene or saturated derivatives of substituted 1,2- arylene; a is 0, 1, 2, or 3; b is an integer from 3 to 20; y is 1 or zero; and x 1 , x 2 , x 3 and x 4 are integers independently selected to give a 15- 60 atom ring are prepared in general by reacting dihydroxy compounds with aldehydes, ketones, ACl 2 or homologues such as (ClCH 2 CH 2 O) 2 A. The products form complexes with ionic metal compounds. The intermediate of formula is prepared from catechol and bis(beta-chloroethyl)ether; that of formula and analogues by acid hydrolysis of the corresponding compounds of the invention in which A is CH 2 .
