1365210 Seats convertible to beds; tensioning mattress springs G FREEDMAN 21 Sept 1972 [22 June 1972] 43812/72 Headings A4J and A4M [Also in Division E2] A seat assembly, especially for a mobile home, comprises seat and back frames 21a, 22a hingedly mounted on a base 20a for movement selectively into any one of three positions, viz. two seat positions in which the seat and back frames 21a, 22a inter-change their functions to define seats facing in opposite directions, as in Figs.11, 12, and a bed forming position in which the frames 21a, 22a are horizontal and aligned, the hinge mechanism including means for releasably locking the frames 21a, 22a to each other when in the seat positions. The hinge mechanism includes a pair of levers 67, 68 hinged, at 82, 83, to the base 20a, hinge plates 71, 72 rigidly secured to the respective frames 21a, 22a. A pivot pin 97 on plate 71 engages a hole 98 in lever 67 and a pivot pin 95 on lever 68 engages through a hole 94 in plate 71 into an end of a rod 74. Rod 74 forms part of a seat locking assembly 113 which further includes a rod 73 parallel and rigidly attached to the first rod 74. The rod 73 has an end 100 engaged in an arcuate slot 101 in plate 71 and is normally biased by a spring 76 into a notch 103 in plate 72 to hold the frames 21a, 22a against movement relative to each other. Plate 72 has an integral pivot pin 114 which engages a hole 115 in the other plate 71. To move the seat between oppositely facing seat positions, e.g. from Fig.11 to Fig.12 positions, locking pins 55, 56 are released from engagement in holes 86, 84 in the levers 67, 68 by manual rotation of a rod 58 acting through cables 61-64, Fig.5 (not shown). The locked together frames 21a, 22a are then swung on the levers 67, 68 which pivot at 83, 82 to the new seat position and the locking pins 55, 56 relocate in holes 87, 85 in the levers 67, 68. When the bed position of Fig.13 is to be attained a control knob is displaced to swing the rod 73 about the axis of the other rod 74 to remove rod 73 from notch 103 and thereby permit the hinge plates 71, 72 to pivot relative to each other on the pivot pin 114 whereby the frames 21a, 22a may swing to a horizontally aligned bed position. Means are provided for adjusting the degree of firmness of the upholstery of the frames 21a, 22a Fig.6B (not shown).
