In a hinge attachment adjustably connecting a seat back to the seat and comprising two pairs of hinge parts, a toothed segment on one part of each pair meshing with a toothed member on the other part of each pair to lock the parts together, and simultaneous locking of both pairs being ensured by means of a shaft common to both pairs, the pairs of hinge parts form cases enclosing the toothed segments and toothed members, and to at least one of the parts carrying the toothed members is pivotally connected a lever adapted to move at least one of the toothed members against the action of a spring. As shown in Fig. 3, a seat back is secured to a pair of hinge parts 2. Each of the latter is formed with a peripheral flange and its lower portion, which is widened as at 9 carries a pivot pin 10 and a toothed segment 16 concentric with the latter. The pin is journalled in the upper unflanged portion 11 of a peripherally flanged hinge part 1 attached to the seat. Relative movement between the parts is limited by interengagement of their flanges. A torsion spring 27, anchored at its respective ends to the part 1 and pin 10, urges the part 2 to an upright position. A shaft 19, journalled in the pair of parts 1, carries adjacent each of the latter a toothed pawl 20 drawn into engagement with the respective toothed segment by means of a spring 21. A lever 35 is provided at one or both ends of the shaft for turning the latter for freeing the pawls from the segments to permit adjustment of the back. A plate (not shown) covers the junction of the hinge parts and is bolted to part 1 at the points 33. Each part 1 is pivoted to a fixed structure at a point 5 and rests on said structure at an abutment 36. In a modification, Fig. 6, peripherally flanged hinge parts 102, secured to the back, carry hinge pin- 110 and concentric with the latter internally toothed segments 116, the pins being journalled in the upper portions of peripherally flanged hinge parts 101 secured to the seat. The flanged edge of part 102 is cut away between abutments 137, 138 to accommodate part 101. The junction of the hinge parts is-covered by a plate (not shown). Torsion springs 127 urge the parts 102 to the upright position. A shaft 119 journalled in the parts 101, carries at each end a toothed pinion 141 engaged with a respective segment 116. To one of the parts 101 is pivoted at 142 a lever 135 carrying a toothed pawl 120 drawn into engagement with the adjacent segment 116 by means of a spring 144 acting on the lever.
