6 Claims.

This invention relates to a pad attachment for bed couches.

An object of the present invention is to provide a pad attachment for a bed couch in which there is a free marginal portion of the pad which may be lifted to tuck into the space therebelow the marginal portions of a bed sheet.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a pad attachment for a bed couch wherein the pad is attached to a foundation cover so as to provide a free marginal portion of the pad which enables such portion to be lifted and to receive in the space between such portion and the cover the marginal portions of a bed sheet.

A further object ofthe present invention is to provide a pad attachment for application to any type of bed couches.

A still further object of the present invention is to provide a pad attachment for bed couches which is simple in structure, highly efficient in use, and commercially feasible.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which: 7

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pad attachment of the present invention applied to a bed couch having its hinged back shifted to its flat position to serve as a bed, with a portion of the pad turned back to show its connection to the foundation bed couch cover.

Figure 2 is a top plan'view of the pad attachment of Figure 1, with parts broken away and in section, the dotted lines indicating one form of connection of the pad to the foundation bed couch cover and showing the'slit in the under face of the pad and the two filler cushion sections of flexible material with a separator tab therebetween.

Figure 3.'is a sectional view taken along the line 33 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is an exploded perspective view of the assembly of Figure l, with the pad turned back to show the slit and the separator tab between the two filler cushion sections and projecting through the slit, as well as the cooperating attaching means on the separator tab and the under face of the pad.

Figure 5 is a top plan view of the pad attachment of Figure 1, with parts broken away and in section, the dotted lines indicating another form of connection of the pad to the foundaton bed couch cover and showing the slitv in the under face of the pad and the two filler cushion sections with the separator tabrtherebetween. .r

Figure 6 is an enlarged perspective view of the assembly of Figure 1, but with the bed couch having its hinged back shifted to its upright position to serve as a couch and the pad attachment of the present invention applied to such couch, the dotted lines indicating the connection of the pad to the foundation bed couch cover.

Figure ,11 is a perspective view, on a reduced scale, of the assembly of Figure 1, but showing the pad attachment of the present invention applied to a bed couch of the type having no hinged back with a single filler cushion section partially withdrawn and partially broken away.

Referring to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, the numeral lil designates a bed couch of the hinged back type having the hinged back H shifted to its fiat position to serve as a bed, and applied to the bed couch is a pad attachment I2 of the present invention. The pad attachment l2 comprises a foundation cover I3 shaped to conformably embrace the bed couch l0, and a plain pad 14 conformably shaped to fit the cover I3 superimposed upon the cover and attached to the cover in at least two opposed regions spaced from the bounding edges of the cover to form a free marginal portion I5 of the pad which may be lifted to give access to the space between such portion and the cover 13 and to tuck into such space the marginal portions of a bed sheet when covering the pad attachment I2. As shown in Figure 2, the opposed regions of attachment of the pad Hi to the foundation cover 13 are two parallel repair of flexible sheets 29 and 2| arranged in superimposed spaced relation and an upstandingtape 22 interposed between and extending-about the border 'of the sheets and secured thereto by a binding 23. The lower sheet 2| is provided with a longitudinally extending slit 24 in its midportion. Two

25 and 26 each fabricated of flexible material, such as sponge rubber, latex hair, felt, conformably fit and are housed within the sheathing, the sections being inserted into the sheathing through the slit 24 so that they are in side by side relation. A separator tab 2! depends from the under face of the upper sheet and extends between the cushion sections and 26 and through and out of the slit 24. The projecting end of the separator tab 21, Figure 4, has a plurality of spaced fastening elements 28 which coact with complementa'l elements 29 on the exterior face of the lower sheet 2| for securing the tab 21 to the lower sheet 2!. The purpose of the separator tab is to permit the bending of the pad along such tab upon shifting of the hinged back H of the bed couch H] to its upright position to serve as a couch and cause the pad to resume its plain appearance upon shifting of such hinged back to its fiat position to serve as a bed. The lower sheet it, Figure 2, is attached to the top 1-8 of the foundation cover it along the two parallel regions 13 and Il as by thread stitching.

If desired, the opposed regions of attachment of the pad M to the foundation cover [3 may be as shown in Figure 5, namely, along the two parallel regions 56 and Il spaced from and parallel to the side edges of the cover and along two I parallel regions 3i? and 3! spacedfron and parallel to the end edges of the cover, the manner of attachment being by thread stitching the lower sheet 2! of the pad I4 along the aforesaid regions to the cover l3.

Reverting to Figures 6 and 7, the assembly of such figures is the same as that of Figures 1 to 4, the only difference being that the bed couch H3 has the hinged back ll shifted to its upright position to serve as a couch. The, structure of the pad attachment, according to the present invention, in the assembly of Figures 6 and -'Z, is identical to that of the assembly of Figures 1 to 4, and specifically described hereinabove.

25 and 23, as in the assembly of Figures 1 to 7 inclusive, the pad 32, Figures 8, v9, and 10, may be tufted, with its sheathing filled with only one filler cushion section 33. It is to be noted that the specific structure of the bed couch and the foundation cover of the pad attachment of the present invention in the assembly of Figures 8, 9 and 10, is, however, identical to that of the bed couch In and foundation cover of the assembly of Figures 1 to '7 inclusive. The pad 32 likewise includes a sheathing embodying a pair of -fi'eX-ible sheets 3% and 35 arranged in superimposed spaced rela tion and an upstandin tape 35 interposed between and extending about the border of the sheets and secured thereto by a binding 3's. A single filler cushion section 33 fabricated of flexible material conformably tits and is housed Within the sheathing of the pad 32. As shown in Figures 8 to 10 inclusive, the opposed regions of attachment of the pad 32 to the foundation cover 13 are two

33 and 39 comprises a plurality of spaced tufting buttons it which are fastened toc'omplemental tuft-ins cords 4| extending upwardly through the top l8 of the foundation cover l3, the lower sheet 35, the filler section 33, and the upper sheet 34. 38 and 39 are other rows of tuftin buttons 40 which are likewise fastened to complemental tufting cords 4| extending upwardly through the top of the foundation cover .and the sheets of the sheathing of the pad 32 and the filler section 33 enclosed in the sheathing of the pad 32.

It is also possible to apply the pad attachment of the present invention to a bed couch of the typehavingno hinged back, with the sheathing of the pad enclosing only a single filler cushion section. By reference to Figure 11, the numeral 45 designates a bed couch of the type having no hinged back with the pad attachment according to the present invention applied thereto. The pad attachment, as shown in Figure 11, includes a foundation cover 4% of the same structure as the cover- 13 previously described, a plain pad 41 conformably shaped to fit the cover .45 and superimposed upon the cover and attached to the cover in the same manner as previously described in connection with the pad 16. The pad .7 cmbodies a sheathing which includes spaced sheets 48, only one being shown, arranged in supermposed relation with anups-tanding tape 49 interposedbctween and extending about the border of, the sheets secured thereto by a binding The tape 49. adj acent oneend of the sheathing has a portion 52 which is swingably connected to one of, the sheets 4.8 forthe insertion of the single filler cushion section 5i therethrough.

The nail attachment of the present invention when applied to any bed couch not only enhances the appearance of the couch, but also makes the bed couch, when serving either as a bed or a couch, more com ortable. 2. In a pad attachment for a bed couch, a foundation cover shaped .toconformably embrace a bed couch, and a pad conformably shaped to fit said cover superimposed upon said cover and attached to said cover along two parallel regions spaced: from and parallel .to two bounding edges of said cover to form a free marginal portion of the padwhich maybe lifted. to give access to the space between such portion and said cover and to tuck into said space the marginal portions of .a bed sheet. when covering said pad attachment.

3. In a pad attachment: for .a bed couch, a foundation.covershapedto conformably embrace a .bed couch, and a pad .conformably shaped to fit saidcoven superimposed upon said cover and. attached to said cover along two parallel regions:

spaced from and parallel to the side edges of said c-overand along two parallel regions spaced from and parallel to the end edges of said cover to form a free marginal portion of the pad which may be lifted to give access to the space between such portion and said cover and to tuck into said space the marginal portions of a bed sheet when covering said pad attachment.

4. In apad attachment for a bed couch, a foundation cover including a top and a skirt depending from said top shaped to conformably embrace a bed couch, and a pad conformably shaped to fit the top of said cover superimposed upon the top of said cover, said pad including a sheathing embodying a pair of sheets arranged in superimposed spaced relation and an upstanding tape. interposed between and extending about the border of said sheets and secured thereto, and a filler cushion section of flexible material conformably fitting and housed within said sheathing, said pad being attached to said foundation cover along .two parallel regions spaced from and parallel to two bounding edges of said cover to form a free marginal portion of the pad which may be lifted to give access to the space between such portion and said cover and to tuck into said space the marginal portions of a bed sheet when covering said pad attachment.

5. In a pad attachment for a bed couch, a

foundation cover including a top and a skirt depending from said top shaped to conIo-rrnably embrace a bed couch, and a pad conformably shaped to fit the top of said cover superimposed upon the top of said cover, said pad including a sheathing embodying a pair of sheets arranged in superimposed spaced relation and an upstanding tape interposed between and extending about the border of said sheets and secured thereto, two filler cushion sections fabricated of flexible material arranged in side by side relation conformably fitting and housed within said sheathing, a separator tab interposed between said cushion sections and depending from the under face of the upper sheet, said pad being attached to said foundation cover along two parallel regions spaced from and parallel to two bounding edges of said cover to form a free marginal portion of the pad which may be lifted to give access to the space between such portionand said cover and to tuck into said space the marginal portions of a bed sheet when covering said pad attachment.

6. In a pad attachment for a bed couch, a foundation cover including a top and a skirt depending from said top shaped toconformably embrace a bed couch, and a pad conformably shaped to fit the top of said cover superimposed upon the top of said cover, said pad including a sheathing embodying a pair of sheets arranged in superimposed spaced relation and an upstanding tape interposed between and extending about the border of said sheets and secured thereto, the lower sheet being provided with a longitudinally extending slit in its mid-portion, two filler cushion sections fabricated. of flexible material arranged in side by side relation conformably fitting and housed within said sheathing, a separator tab depending from the under face of the upper sheet and extending between said cushion sections and through and out of said slit, and coacting fastening elements on the projecting portion of said tab and the exterior face of the lower sheet for securing said tab to said lower sheet, said pad being attached to said foundation cover along two parallel regions spaced from and parallel to two bounding edges of said cover to form a free marginal portion of the pad which may be lifted to give access to the space between such portion and said cover and to tuck into said space the marginal portions of a bed sheet when covering said pad attachment.
