Abstract

1347663 Adjustable seat mechanisms FRITZ KEIPER 31 Jan 1972 [24 Feb 1971] 4449/72 Heading A4J [Also in Division E2] A hinge fitting for the adjustable backrest of a seat comprises a fixed hinge member 16 to be secured to the seat, a pivotable hinge member 15 to be secured to the backrest and locking means provided there between; the locking means comprising two toothed portions 18, 19 each combined with one of the hinge members, one toothed portion 19 being displaceable and adapted to be optionally engaged or disengaged from the other toothed portion 18 by an operating device actuable by means of a handle 39, the operating device comprising a first element 22 for bringing the displaceable toothed portion 19 into a locking position and a second element 23 for bringing it into a releasing position, the operating elements being pivotably mounted on respective spaced apart pivot pins 17, 26 and being coupled to each other by a lever arrangement. The toothed portion 19 travels between guides 20 and 21, and is displaced into meshed engagement with portion 18 for the locking position by a cammed track 31 of the element 22. The portion 19 is displaced out of mesh for the releasing position by a cammed track 32 of the element 23 which engages a projection 34 on the portion 19. The linking arrangement of the two operating elements 22 and 23 includes a lost-motion device and is such that when the element 22 engages the portion 19 for the locking position, the element 23 simultaneously disengages the projection 34, and when the element 23 moves towards the releasing position a certain amount of material play occurs before the element 22 follows the motion of the element 23. A spring 43 biases the elements 22, 23 into the locking position. The element 23 is fixed to a rotatable pin 26 which is provided with a prismatic cavity (30), Fig. 3 (not shown), into which is inserted a connecting bar (29), Fig. 1 (not shown), so that it rotates with the pin 26 and acts as a link with a corresponding pin of a hinge fitting (14) arranged on the opposite side of the seat.
