Abstract

1364983 Heat treatment at high temperatures KERNFORSCHUNG mbH GES FUER 10 April 1972 [7 May 1971] 16372/72 Heading C7N [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for heat-treating large workpieces 14 at high temperature, e.g. above 2000‹C, and high vacuum (#10<SP>-9</SP>Torr) comprises an inner bell 5 within an outer bell 1. The inner bell 5 is made up of a hot region 7, heated by a cathode arrangement or heating element 13 and surrounded by heat shields 10, and a cold region 8, separated by a water-cooled region 9. In operation, the workpiece, e.g. Nb, Ta, W, Mo, or their alloys is placed on a table 15 in the inner bell 5, a connection 21 is opened and the bells 1, 5 are evacuated by a pump attached to socket 2 to 10<SP>-5</SP> to 10<SP>-6</SP> Torr. The connection 21 is then closed and the inner bell is further evacuated to 10<SP>-9</SP> Torr by pump 12. To avoid contamination of the workpiece 14 by the material of the inner bell 5 due to vacuum evaporation, the bell 5 and workpiece are made of the same material.
