Abstract

1285203 Surface heat-treatment GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 17 Oct 1969 [4 Nov 1968] 51005/69 Heading C7N [Also in Division H1] Refractory metal surfaces, particularly tungsten X-ray tube targets, are heated above their nil ductility temperature and are then subjected to a series of high thermal energy pulses to produce a temperature gradient in the surface layer without causing melting, recrystallization or grain growth. Preferably the pulses are applied by electron beam which may be swept over the treated surface; alternatively or in addition the surface may be moved in relation to the beam. In a particular embodiment, an X-ray target 2 is rotated by induction motor 15 while an electron beam from filament 17 impinges on the focal track, the pulses being produced by solenoid switch under control of timer 39. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2, the electron beam is deflected by plates 47, 48 over a water cooled static target 49.
