Abstract

538,174. Electrode materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 4, 1940, No. 3992. Convention date, March 6, 1939. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Groups II and XXII] An X-ray generator comprises an anode of a copper alloy containing 0.5 per cent of chromium and 1 per cent of an element such as beryllium, lithium, boron, or calcium, and heat treated so as to have an annealing temperature of about 500‹ C. In the form shown which comprises a cathode 15 and a rotary anode 11, the anode consists of a hollow copper alloy body 21 carrying an annular target 13 preferably of rhenium, tungsten, platinum, or uranium. The anode may be made by casting the alloy in a vacuum furnace in a mould in which the target 13 has been anchored by means of wires the outer portions of which are afterwards snipped off. A stationary anode may be similarly made by casting in a mould having an inclined bottom, the target being in the form of a disc. After cooling in the furnace, the casting may be assembled in the tube and heated at 500‹ C. for several hours during which time it may be subjected to electrical bombardment. Specification 385,652, [Group II], is referred to.
