Abstract

226,208. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Coolidge, W. D.). Dec. 10, 1923, [Convention date]. R÷ntgen-ray tubes-. An anode comprises a substantially spherical m a s s of metal of good heat conductivity having one or two passages extending from the exterior to a target consisting of a plate of refractory metal mounted at the centre; by this means secondary electrons and undesired rays are intercepted. As shown, a thick cylindrical stem 1 of copper or silver is formed with a spherical head 2, having a passage 4 for electrons emitted from the cathode, and a passage 6 for the rays. A plate 3 of metal of high atomic number such as tungsten is cast or otherwise embedded in the head. In the casting operation the plate may be mounted on molybdenum or tungsten wires 5 on a graphite plug, which is removed subsequently to leave the passage 4. The passage 6 may be formed by a graphite plug in a similar manner. The stem 1 is sealed into a glass bulb by means of a conical platinum flange 8, and extends outside the bulb, where it may be provided with a heat radiator or surrounded by oil. Specification 10454/15 is referred to.
