Abstract
888,518. Thawing foodstuffs. BURGER EISENWERKE A.G. Oct. 15, 1958 [Oct. 21, 1957], No. 32856/58. Class 49. [Also in Group XI] Foodstuffs which have been cooled to low temperatures or frozen are thawed by heating them with electrically heated air and a highfrequency electrical field, in a chamber which is both heat-insulated and screened relative to high-frequency electrical radiation. The heated air and high-frequency radiation, such as micro-wave oscillations in either the decimetre or centimetre range, are preferably applied simultaneously such that 10-50% of the heat output necessary for the thawing is provided by the high-frequency radiation; during the thawing the high-frequency field may be changed in its intensity, spatial shape or direction and the heated air conveyed alternately in different directions. The heated air may be supplied through the wave-guides for directing the high-frequency energy into the chamber. Referring to the Figure, frozen food-stuffs on racks 16 are thawed in a heatinsulated and screened chamber 10 by heated air circulated by a fan 18 located between a pair of electric heaters 20 and by micro-waves conducted from a generator 12 along slotted wave-guides 14.
