Abstract

1363732 Generating combustion products under pressure GINTER CORP 18 Oct 1971 [16 Oct 1970] 48308/71 Headings F1G and F1L To reduce atmospheric pollutants in a power plant in which air is compressed at 12 and passed to a combustion chamber header 18 for introduction into flame zone 24 where combustion of a stoichiometric quantity of carbonaceous fuel occurs prior to exhaust of the products to drive engine 39, means e.g. nozzles 32 are provided to inject water into the compressed air in or prior to header 18 so as to reduce the flame temperature to a value at which substantially no nitrogen oxides are formed, further water being injected downstream of the flame zone 24 e.g. through nozzles 33, 34 to cause additional cooling of the combustion products. The reduction in flame temperature may be between 600 and 1200‹F to give a temperature of between 2400 and 3200‹F. The temperature of the cooled products may be between 750 and 1800‹F. Temperature sensors may automatically control water injection valves 36, 36' to maintain desired temperature values, whereas fuel may only be supplied when a sensed combustion chamber pressure falls below a set value. Compressor 12 and engine 39 may both be of reciprocating type, as shown, both axial flow turbine type or a combination of the two. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown) the compressed air is regeneratively heated by reverse flow through a region (25) surrounding the combustion chamber. Additional water may be injected into region (25) through nozzle (35). The plant may include a condenser (42) and storage tank (41) for removing the vapourized liquid from the gases leaving engine 39.
